I have now ran 3 days in a row. 11 miles in 3 days. that may not sound like much but it feels like a bunch. it is getting late so once again this will be a quick blog. here are the .5 miles splits for my 5 mile run (slow jog) yesterday: (i didn't hit my watch until just after .5 miles so the first split is an estimate)
.5= 5.0
1.0= 10.16 5.16 170
1.5= 15.41 5.24 171
2.0= 21.1 5.28 172
2.5= 26.42 5.32 169
3.0= 32.14 5.32 171
3.5= 37.31 5.17 168
4.0= 43.21 5.49 170
4.5= 48.46 5.24 170
5.0= 53.53 5.07 172 (finished strong)
it was about 86 degrees and right at dark but still humid. my lower back was tight to start once again and my right hip hurt a little but overall i felt pretty good. that gives me a pace of 10.47 min/mile.
today i ran once again pretty close to dark but i wore all white clothes and my reflective anklet, no close calls.
here are those times in .5 mile splits:
.5= 5.02 155
1.0= 10.13 5.1 167
1.5= 15.38 5.24 168
2.0= 20.59 5.21 166
2.5= 26.2 5.21 163
3.0= 31.49 5.28 166
that gives me a pace of 10.36 min/mile. my heart rate is stating to stay much lower than last week. i think that means it is not as hard for me to run now. my paces have been a little slower but i seem to be working just as hard. not losing any weight, eating habits need to be improved once again. again, my lower back was tight to start the run but it finally loosened up about 1.5 miles. after the run my shins were hurting a little.
i finally ordered some new shoes that are supposed to stabilize my over-pronation/ankle movement, i think these will really help.
i am going to try to get another 8 miler in this weekend, however, starting saturday i will be on call for 4 days in a row. maybe i can squeeze it in sometime. i really didn't want to run tonight but i was afraid if i waited until tomorrow something would come up and i wouldn't get it in. i also kept remembering what cameron hanes wrote "you only regret the runs you don't do." so i couldn't keep from running once i got home. it was only 3 miles, i kept telling myself.
"A mistake is simply another way of doing things."–Katharine Graham. i think this is how i would explain my running form to people that watch me run.

Quick, Lunchtime Post
Don't have much time right now, but i do not want to get behind on posting so here we go. i did run last night, i was on call so i decided to run behind the clinic in case i had a call. the only soreness i had from the 8 miler on sunday was my tendon in my groin area, but it was coming and going throughout the day and had mostly gone by the time i was ready for my run (8:45pm). i will say running at night is much better since it is so much cooler, it was still pretty humid though.
i did 3 miles last night. i think, since the 8 miler bumped me up about 3 weeks, i will redo the 8 mile week again this week, just so i don't go too far too fast. anyway, the 3 miles were pretty slow. i think they were a little faster than what my watch said, i really think it got a little confused at one point where i was running and then turned 180 degrees and ran in the opposite direction, no time to explain my theory right now. anyway, here are the splits for time, split, heart rate in .5 mile splits:
.5= 5.04, 144
1.0= 10.25, 5.21, 161
1.5= 16.15, 5.49, 160
2.0= 21.37, 5.21, 162
2.5= 27.12, 5.35, 161
3.0= 32.59, 5.46, 165
my heart rate is way down from all my other runs, maybe that has to do with my pace being a little slower too, not sure. i noticed my resting heart rate has dropped about 10bpm as well.
so my pace was right at 11min/mile. that is one of my slowest paces ever for that length. but as i've said before, i am not trying to win any races, yet.
the thought of the day is "It has been my philosophy of life that difficulties vanish when faced boldly" Isaac Asimov. the other side of that is that if the difficulties are not faced boldly much of the time they get worse and worse and you have to be bolder and bolder to face them; which is hard if you weren't bold enough in the first place. so, when you are facing a difficult situation just remember to face it boldly and then your boldness will grow and grow.

Miracles Do Happen, but Might Kill Me
Haven't had time to blog in a while, this weekend was really busy. i did get a 4 miler in on friday evening, it was a little painful to start with but towards the end i started feeling much better. i think the humidity to start the run really hurt me, i kept wishing that it would just rain but the dark rain cloud just hung over me (did keep it a little cooler) but made it so humid.
my overall time for the 4 miles was 39.50 minutes which is 9.57min/mile. not that good for such a short distance, but i am not too worried about times right now, just trying to get back into running and getting stamina up a little. here are the breakdowns of time, splits, heart rate by 1/2 mile splits:
.5= 4.54, 152
1.0= 9.11, 4.17, 172
1.5= 13.35, 4.24, 176
2.0= 18.14, 4.38, 177
2.5= 23.14, 4.59 (really slowing down), 176
3.0= 28.56, 5.42 (really slowing down again), 176
3.5= 34.32, 5.35, 174
4.0= 39.5, 5.17 (sped back up a little), 177
i did have some pain in my right calf and quad and my left side during the run but i was able to run through it. on saturday my legs felt great, there was no soreness, stiffness or pain anywhere in my body.
so saturday there was a lot going on and i did not get my long run done that day so i did it on sunday. my scheduled distance was 5 miles. my legs were feeling so good i thought i might try to do 6 miles and skip ahead a week. it was extremely hot and humid when i started off at 6:45 in the evening. however, my legs felt great, i knew if i could get over the heat or if the sun would go down or get behind a cloud i could make the 6 miles. every time i got into the shade i felt great and thought to myself "i think i will try 8 miles today". well, you know how that goes, the thought got into my head and that was how it was going to be, this would probably be looked down upon in most running circles since last week i did not run at all and this week i was trying to do the long run of week 4 in the training schedule. luckily i had my backpack with gatorade that i was constantly sipping on, but the sun was really wearing me down. when i got to 3 miles i went through a curve in the road and i was running directly into the sun with no shade. i ran that direction until i hit the 4 mile mark and then turned around and ran directly away from the sun, with it beating on my back for the next mile. that really took its toll on me, but i wasn't going to let the sun win. i was a little worried at the 3.5 mile mark when i caught a little chill running directly into the sun at 87 degrees or so, i thought i might be getting dehydrated. i made myself keep drinking and the chill went away in a mile or so. at the 1/2 way point i downed a GU energy packet and drank a good bit of gatorade and started the 4 miles back home. my legs never hurt (other than being a little tired) the entire run. the only pain i had was in my lower back for the first mile (i think this was due to not having by backpack adjusted correctly or not stretching before the run like i normally do) but when i stopped my feet started hurting. i had blisters on the inside of both feet, something i only got once all of last year and my plantar tendon on the right foot was hurting a good bit. i got home and stretched then got in the shower and that was when the real pain hit. not really realizing it, the insides of my thighs were chafed and when the water hit them i thought someone had stabbed me there. i was careful with the chafing area and stretched my plantar tendon the rest of the night and both of them seem fine today. i bought some chafing gel today for the next run. my knees and lower back have seemed a little sore at times today but nothing all that bad. so here are the times, splits, and heart rates of the 8 mile run in 1/2 mile splits:
.5= 4.56,157
1.0= 10.14, 5.17, 174
1.5= 15.42, 5.28, 175
2.0= 21.36, 5.53, 177
2.5= 27.33, 5.57, 175
3.0= 33.30, 5.57, 178
3.5= 38.51, 5.21, 176
4.0= 44.44, 5.53, 180
4.5= 50.45, 6.00, 178
5.0= 56.53, 6.07, 178
5.5= 63.15, 6.22, 174
6.0= 69.19, 6.04, 175
6.5= 75.30, 6.11, 173
7.0= 81.27, 5.57, 177
7.5= 87.35, 6.07, 176
8.0= 93.50, 6.14, 171
these times are pretty slow, but i knew with the distance i was trying to do and the heat/humidity i was going to have to start out slow and pay no attention to time. i never really looked at my watch to check times or splits, i just ran at a pace that i thought i could finish. you can tell the splits varied by quite a bit. some of that is due to terrain and some due to shade or lack of. that gives me a pace of about 11:44 min/mile. not that good considering some people run a marathon in a little over 2 hours and qualifying for most major marathons is a little over 3 hours. at that pace it would have taken me 3 hours to run 16 miles, 10 fewer miles than a marathon. i'm getting there, the way i see it i get to enjoy the scenery much more than those guys that are running so fast.
here is another quote from Vince Lombardi,"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will." i thought this was appropriate because i know it was not my strength or fitness that allowed me to finish the 8 miles but a will to do it. a will to keep my legs moving and keep going, to forget about the sun and its heat, a will to run the last 2 miles home instead of walk in the dark, on the road where people would just as soon hit you and drive off as they would slow down and move over a little. really, as i was about to get to 3.5 miles i knew God was giving me the strength to make it 8 miles, there was no doubt in my mind at that point. i could feel Him pushing.

Twice this week, so far
I had to work late tonight, wasn't sure i was going to get my run in. luckily i can now run behind the clinic on a road that has almost no traffic. it is much safer than running out here by the house.
i had already eaten supper, i gave it about an hour but that wasn't enough time, i really knew better. the other mistake i made was not stretching after my run on monday. my lower back was so tight today and my stomach felt so bloated, the entire run. it was pretty tough but there was no way i wasn't going to get the three miles in. i told myself to just keep running through the discomfort because i wasn't stopping. that helped, a little.
my time today was a little slower than monday, not good. it was 30.45. surely i will start getting back to my old times before too long. during the run every 1/2 mile kept taking longer and longer. it has been about 1.5 hours since my run and i feel much better now. i did a little stretching after the run and my entire back popped and it felt pretty good.
thought of the day "the biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it is occurring." Bernard Shaw this reminds me of my life. so many times i think i have communicated something to someone because i think the other people are thinking the same line i am thinking in. most of the time they are not. then this creates confusion. another thing i do and other people i know do, is to assume that someone else is communicating something with a third party and the second party is assuming i am communicating with the third party. then the third party is left out or only gets part of the info. if we all learned how to communicate better and then took the time to do so we would all go through life a little smoother.

Restart, once again
started back running today, maybe i can get a marathon done this fall, i may have to sacrifice a little hunting, but i think it will be worth it.
i ran 3 miles today. during the run every part of body hurt, from my shoulder, upper and lower back, right knee, both calves and both feet. i guess the extra weight i am carrying on my belly isn't helping any. i did the 3 miles in 29.33 minutes, not my fastest time but bot my slowest either. at one point towards the end of the run i was going downhill and i thought, "that feels good" then i thought "well, maybe not good, but that feels better."
don't have much time to write tonight, it is already kinda late so i will just leave you with a thought that i have used before but kept going through my mind during the run, one foot in front of the other and RELENTLESS FORWARD PROGRESS.
see you in a day or two.
